Baby steps in Melbourne
Thanks to many for helping me with the tips below to make my initial steps easier in Melbourne.
Saving with Sense
Food
- A2 milk found to be great, which we tasted only in villages of India.
- Fruits and Vegetables are of great quality. Some of the local wholesale markets sell fresher than supermarkets.
- Weekend markets sell items at cheaper. Some items were like antique pieces that are hard to get in malls http://mfm.com.au/
Banks
use https://bpay.com.au/look-up-biller-code-financial-institution to check the valid billers to avoid scams
Credit Check
A credit provider (like a bank, utility company, or internet service provider) can ask for a credit report supporting your application for a new loan or service contract.
If you’re looking to access a free credit report, these are the credit reporting bodies we share information with:
Public transport
- For Public transport, Myki cards are a must. There is a limit on daily charges. Beyond a certain level, it is free :-)
- You can also go for weekly or monthly passes, which will be cheaper for regular users
- for a duration of a certain duration ( 2 hours), charges are limited.
- Roam as much as you can in 2 hours, you won't be charged more than fixed amount ;-)
- In CBD areas, it is free in a "zone". Enjoy and visit as much as you can.
Telecommunication
- Look for the areas with NBN connectivity
- Quality of internet was much lower than Singapore & India.
Furniture
- I found SuperAmart http://www.superamart.com.au/ to be reasonable and trustworthy.
- They replaced the cot purchased when it was found that it did not fit the mattress that they had recommended.
Library:
- there are multiple library membership based on location.
- the best thing was to get membership on lynda.com - https://www.lynda.com/portal/sip?org=erl.vic.gov.au
- On windows 10, I could download the courses for offline usage in Lynda app
